Jane's design-features line is "sweepback 25° at quarter-chord." Boeing's 737-600/700/800/900 Aircraft Maintenance Manual, Chapter 06, records 25.03° at the 25 percent chord line. Chris Brady's The Boeing 737 Technical Guide tables list 25.02° for the NG -800. Unswept wings read as a 1940s prop.

Jane's lists tailplane span, all NG versions, at 14.35 m (47 ft 1 in); the AMM records the same 47 ft 1 in. Against a 34.31 m wing that tail is 42 percent of span.

The engine is two diameters. Safran's CFM56-7B sheet lists fan diameter 61 in for every rating from -7B18/3 through -7B27/3. FAA Type Certificate Data Sheet E00056EN, Revision 10 (9 August 2016), lists maximum envelope width 83.4 in (2,118 mm). A 61-inch circle under the wing is a fan. The nacelle is the envelope.

Jane's also lists fuselage width 3.76 m (12 ft 4 in), dihedral 6° at the root, and engine centreline spacing 9.65 m (31 ft 8 in).

Scott Robertson, industrial designer and former ArtCenter College of Design instructor, wrote in How to Draw (Design Studio Press, 2013, with Thomas Bertling): "The optimal lens that creates an acceptable amount of distortion is a 50mm lens. This translates into the drawing as a 60° Cone of Vision." Plant the vanishing points on the borders of an 11-inch sketchbook and the cone opens far past 60°. David DeRoche, author of the Open Oregon textbook Drawing is Seeing (2022), names the same failure from the other end: "Having the two vanishing points too close together can make the angles steeper than what you would typically find in the real world."

  4. Seat the wing at mid-body, low on the tube, and sweep the leading edge 25°. Jane's 6° dihedral means each tip sits above the root.
  5. Draw the fin, then the tailplane at 14.35 m against the 34.31 m wing. The 737's horizontal stabilizer meets the fuselage at the base of the fin, not as a T-tail.
  6. Hang the nacelles under the wing, inboard (Jane's 9.65 m between centrelines), to the 83.4 in FAA envelope. The 737NG nacelle is flattened on the bottom so the 61-inch fan clears the pavement.
  7. Add a wraparound cockpit visor, then a cabin window row, then landing gear if the airplane is on the ground. EasyArtGuides puts portholes after the large sections.

Boeing's Next-Generation 737 Airplane Characteristics for Airport Planning, D6-58325-7, Revision C, October 2025, lists 737-800 engine-to-ground clearance as 2 ft 1 in (0.64 m) at operating empty weight and 1 ft 7 in (0.48 m) at maximum taxi weight.

Where should viewer eye level and vanishing-point distance sit?

ISO 7250-1:2017, clause 6.1.3, defines standing eye height as floor to ectocanthion, subject standing, head in the Frankfurt plane. That is the tarmac quantity.

MIL-STD-1472G, Appendix B, Table B-I, gives a design range, not a mean: male standing eye height 154.5 cm (60.8 in) at the 5th percentile and 175.6 cm (69.1 in) at the 95th; female 150.1 cm (59.1 in) to 164.2 cm (64.6 in). Robertson's 60° cone, filling an 11-inch width, puts the station point 9.5 in behind the picture plane. A 45°/45° pair of vanishing points then sits 19 in apart; on A4 (210 mm) those points are 364 mm apart. Robertson equates his 60° cone with a 50 mm lens. Instructors who demonstrate the same construction on video, including the "How to Draw in Any Focal Length" breakdown that cites his book, have called that cone "roughly equivalent to about having a 35 millimeter focal length." The camera analogies do not agree. The drawing rule both sides keep is the 60° cone.
